Known as Clearo to all he was a larger-than-life character in every sense of the word
Dave Cleary was, first and foremost, a proud Orrell man. He followed in the path of many others, playing through Orrell RUFC Juniors and then the Colts.
Once in the open age section, he soon attained a first team spot and became an integral part of what was to become a formidable Orrell pack. This pack became a match for every other pack of forwards in the country.
Southern, Hitchen, Hynes, Kimmins, the Cusani brothers, Moss, Manley, Bibby, Balmer and Cleary- plus a talented backline – took the Orrell name to the top of the English 1st Division in 1991 and narrowly missed becoming English champions losing out to Bath on points difference.
Dave was especially proud of this achievement when he pointed out that more than 2/3rds of this group all hailed from the locality!
Dave’s growth from Colts to 1XV reflected his desire and determination to excel. His character and commitment were such that his presence in the changing room served as a boost to his teammates. In many ways he became Orrell’s talisman – especially for the really big games.
As his game went to new heights, representative honours followed being selected for Lancashire (tour to Zimbabwe), the North and the Irish Exiles. Players from other clubs in these teams were always quick to express their admiration for what Dave brought to the occasions.
The more exalted the opposition, the more Dave would step up to the mark and his competitive attitude was a big factor in getting his teammates up for the contest.
In the game itself, he led by example. He was totally committed, fearless, with a ferocious appetite for work and never afraid to put his body on the line.
Dave Cleary was an irreplaceable character, admired by all who played with and against him. He loved his rugby; he loved the buzz of the club and was never happier than gathering his team mates together after the match for “a quiet one”. Laughter featured strongly and he kept his audience royally entertained.
Dave’s contribution to Orrell RUFC was enormous as a player and teammate. He was a key member of the team, at a time when the club reached its highest point in the amateur game. All of us who either played alongside, coached or watched Dave will have the fondest unforgettable memories of him as a player and a great club man.
His generosity was legendary, and this went beyond rugby as a significant donor to Derian House.
Farewell to a very special Orrell man.
